What will we do when the Government run out of things to 'cut'?

And also by the Tories.

Thatcher introduced the much fairer 'Poll Tax', the populace rebelled, the Poll Tax was tweaked, and everybody suddenly paid 10 times more.

Job done........................................ by a Tory.

The poll tax put people on the streets and broke families up.

No,the council sets the rates, not central government..

The Council didn't introduce the Poll Tax ........................ !!!!!

It was foisted on ALL local Governments by Thatcher.

Without her interference, the old rating system would have prevailed.

The money people up Dore, Ecclesall, Totley and Whirlow (with 3 cars in the family) were subsidising Sheffield buses by a £20 a year each (or whatever), and Thatcher wanted to put a stop to it. Why should the richer ones subsidise the poorer ones?

She applauded greed and selfishness, and the country went downhill rapidly over her tenure. Sadly, Blair and his cohorts carried on the 'greed is good' template, and now it's accepted as the norm in our society.

And that's why it's not the country it was.

All for one, and one for all.

The poll tax put people on the streets and broke families up.

Worse than that kiddo, it broke the country up.

But she ignored all the riots and the demonstrations, and sent in the Police and the Military to prove that her way was best.

Trouble is, her way wasn't best. Greed and selfishness are not very good traits to have.

Some people made good money under Thatchers reign, and now they think they're 'upper class'.

They're just two bob millionaires, with a leased BMW.

Trouble is, more money made for bigger wages which made for closures, which made for the benefit culture. Then the Tories said 'high wage demands were damaging our economy"

From that, read, the Directors and owners and upper Management could cream off all they like, but the workers mustn't rock the boat.

The council sets the level of council tax...

And the Government cuts the amount Sheffield has to spend, thereby forcing the Council to make their money by some other means.

The only means open to them is to raise the Council Tax.

It's not Rocket Science.

Don't think it's only Sheffield Council cos it isn't.

Can anyone explain to me why this country HAS to make £250b cuts by 2015?

WHY?

What will happen if we don't make these cuts?

Have you seen Spain/Greece in the news recently..the government spends more than it earns (taxes) it has to borrow to plug the gap..at the moment the interest rate we pay is low..if we are seen to be profligate then the interest we pay on our borrowing will go up,that's if anyone will lend at all..then starts an ever steeper downward spiral....
