Hotmale 1954
The Army now being cut to 82,000, not even enough to fill Wembley Stadium. To put it in perspective, Iraq's army is one million strong. What's next to be shredded?

L00b
£46 for 14 minutes in a Dentist's chair. And things are ok? They are for the Dentist. Out of interest...how much of that £197/hour do you think the dentist actually gets in his pocket? After he's finished paying for staff, premises, all required insurances, supplies, equipment, utilities, rates, etc, that is?
rickiethecat
If only all other countries armies were reduced too and we finally had a bit of world peace. I agree. The problem with employing thousands of people in the armed forces is that you have to give them wars to fight. There's only so much bayonetting bags of straw on Salisbury Plain you can do. If the purpose of the armed forces was purely to defend the UK from invasion they could cut many thousands more from the ranks without it weakening our defences. The problem these days is that the British armed forces are used to fight illegal wars that have nothing to do with us.

Lab-rat
Well when we had nationalisation we did at least have a steel industry and coal mines and cheap bus fares and banks that did not rip us off. Also do not forget a car and motor cycle industry that belonged to us and not the Indians or the Japanese. On top of that our kids got free milk at school and an Education system that worked. After the general discontent brewing in the late 1970s, by 1980 British Steel was losing £1 million A DAY!......that's £365 million a year!!!! What do you think that equates to in 2012's money (equivalent)? Eye popping! Using the retail price index that would equate to £3.34 million a DAY loss or £5.17 million a DAY loss (using average earnings) compared to today's money!!!!!!!!! Cuts have always happened.......in those days it was sell off the family jewels.......there aren't any jewels left now so real cuts are the only way to balance the books. The real problem will always be don't spend what you don't have.....but the economy relies on spending to keep it rolling..... dilemma! Quote Mr John Osbourne (Sheffield Hallam) "We must consider the fact that the British Steel Corporation has been losing almost £1 million a day. This is a great challenge to everyone in the industry."

Mecky
I asked the question a lot over the last 30 years but nobody could answer.
L00b
It was a rethorical question, but nvm... About £46/hr assuming a 37hr week.Which makes for £88,5k p.a. gross (assuming your £46 estimate is before tax). Rather than the £379k p.a. Hotmale54 was suggesting.
