Where do the puppets and props from our favourite films live?

Recommended Posts

Strange thought, but often wondered this, since a young age!

Do you think there is a massive warehouse somewhere where they're all kept?

Wonder where the massive luck dragon from Neverending Story is... must have taken up a full warehouse to keep him!

Falkor was probably destroyed due to the size and it probably never existed as one piece, but multiple pieces that fit together for shooting. Most props are disposed of when shooting finishes, unless there is an obvious market for them. I know the original auryn is kept in Steven Spielberg's office.

There is a company in London that sell props from films, they have a site here: http://www.propstore.com

There was one of those auction/antique type programs the other day on the TV, and one of the 'experts' had a contact who hires 'props' to film companies and TV etc. They showed the warehouse, and there was all sorts of odd things in there. So there are companies that specialise in props.

Yeah I know for def that Falkor was in bits. But even so, his face was HUUUUUGE haha. Wonder how big the Morla the big turtle thing really was.

Weird if you think about it.. all them crazy characters from childhood films, either boxed away, in pieces attracting dust or on some rich person's house. It'd be so cool if there was just a huge room full of em. A bit scary tho :P

Something I can finally give a decent answer too. The major studios rent many of their generic props (tables, chairs, furniture etc.) from any number of companies that hold and store huge numbers of props in warehouses across Hollywood and the surrounding areas. To give you an idea of the scale of these operations I know of two companies that just rent out chairs and tables to various film productions. Within their warehouses are just about any style or size you could possibly require.

If you're looking for something more unique then your props master/art department will design it and have it made specifically for you.

At the end of filming props that were rented are returned to the leasing company or to general stores within the film lot.

Props made specifically for certain characters or films are often given to the Director/Actor/Producer. Harrison Ford for example has the bullwhip and fedora (or should I say one of them as there's usually several) from Raiders of the Lost Ark and the cast from the Harry Potter series were all presented with their wands at the conclusion.

Some props are given to film museums such as those in London and LA and some go into use for theme parks such as the Disney MGM back lot tour and the Harry Potter experience at Leavesden Studios in Watford.

A lot do end up in storage in case they are required for sequels but quite often props are broken down to their composite parts and returned to the warehouse.

With so many of the Hollywood Studios now not much more than distribution companies who rent out space on their lots to small one time companies there is little space left to keep the huge sets and props indefinitely.

The one exception to this are Lucas Film who have a huge storage facility were they store most of their props simply because George Lucas refuses to throw things out.
