Enough land to build over 1.5 BILLION homes in the UK!

Yes. According to the most detailed analysis ever conducted, almost 98% of England is, in their word, natural.

Elsewhere in the UK, the figure rises to more than 99%. It is clear that only a small fraction of Britain has been concreted over.

There will be quibbles. What about the gardens people have paved? The NEA looked at that, noting how in London an estimated 3,200 hectares of front gardens have been covered in concrete, bricks or gravel.

Paving levels are highest, it was found, in the North-East of England and Scotland, where 47% and 31% of front gardens are more than three-quarters paved. The detail in their analysis is impressive.

Quite simply, the figures suggest Britain's mental picture of its landscape is far removed from the reality.

But 1.5% of the land in the UK has been built on.

There are just over 25 million homes in the UK.

IF we covered the lot in housing, we could build well over 1.5 Billion homes. (1.641 billion assuming we only have 25 million homes at present - in reality it is a bit more)

We could of course build higher, we could increase density. We could quite easily house the world's entire population if needs be. Every man woman and child could theoretically have a home each in the UK.

The UK population is only 60 million. If we built 35 million houses we could have a house each. And over 90% of the UK still wouldn't have been built on!

Yet the poor do not have access to land. They cannot build housing, they cannot set up slums/tent cities whilst they save up/bake bricks to build! They cannot even grow their own food. Many people are trapped in flats without space to grow food, they can only grow a little in the small pockets of life giving light besides the windows. - That's all a result of land monopoly.

The main point here is...

We HAVE LOTS OF LAND.

Plenty to build on.

There is lots of water, and it is so cheap it is often given away for free.

There is even more air, and there is no need to transport it, there is so much of it to go around, that it is free.

We have a lack of housing, it is expensive. But we could build so much housing, that we could each have a house or two. If we were then to tax multiple property ownership heavily, we could have a society, where every man has a house, housing is cheap, and where people could move easily for work into the 'spare housing'.

We could even become cannibals because the only thing to eat would be people.:gag:

Don't be silly. We could turn roofs into gardens, and increase our acreage!

Hell, we could even grow food indoors utilising good old windows, hydroponics and aeroponics. We can even grow food underground (mushrooms for example - but also everything else with hydroponics).

We can grow food in space for crying out loud.

Your fear is unfounded.

We have enough room to build more housing and grow MORE food at the same time. We can have VERTICAL gardens.

Aye, I think it is a load of bunkum.

If it were possible I'd hypnotise the whole of the UK and create a society worth living in, and fighting FOR. One with plenty of housing :)

That’s OK then, I was a little worried that I would end up having to eat some fat bloke with smelly pits, will everyone be given a safety harness whilst gardening on the roof.

There isnt enough water. It's a massive problem, it's only due to the awful summer the rivers aren't dry in the south east, based on average (or below average) rainfall. Let's say the previous years water levels (ie low) become the norm. We'll all be glad of housing to shelter when the riots for drinker water start.

Water Abstraction is a huge issue but not the only one. Are you volunteering to live next to a nuclear power station or under a wind turbine (as obviously they'll be flying up to power said housing).
