chem1st
There isnt enough water. It's a massive problem, it's only due to the awful summer the rivers aren't dry in the south east, based on average (or below average) rainfall. Let's say the previous years water levels (ie low) become the norm. We'll all be glad of housing to shelter when the riots for drinker water start. Water Abstraction is a huge issue but not the only one. Are you volunteering to live next to a nuclear power station or under a wind turbine (as obviously they'll be flying up to power said housing). Water supply is an issue, but it is still possible. Nations are building cities in the desert! We can import water. We can have solar powered desalination plants on board ships. It is an issue, it is a problem, but it can be solved.
Teddybare
Don't be silly. We could turn roofs into gardens, and increase our acreage! Hell, we could even grow food indoors utilising good old windows, hydroponics and aeroponics. We can even grow food underground (mushrooms for example - but also everything else with hydroponics). We can grow food in space for crying out loud. Your fear is unfounded. We have enough room to build more housing and grow MORE food at the same time. We can have VERTICAL gardens. What food can be grown in space? You don't mean Quorn do you? It will never be an issue anyhow, there's going to be a natural or man made disaster that wipes out half the population. Then we won't have to have squalid London style extensions on our gardens.
shane39
Aye, I think it is a load of bunkum. If it were possible I'd hypnotise the whole of the UK and create a society worth living in, and fighting FOR. One with plenty of housing Good for you.... Ex-sTAb
Who is going to pay for the destruction of the English Countryside? The main problem isn't that there isn't enough houses, its that there are too many people trying to get them. Supply and Demand. High Demand = Higher Prices. And with British Councils "dodgy" allocation of Social housing and lack of constructing more, more people are shoved into the hands of private landlords, who can and will charge more because of...... Supply and Demand. High Demand = Higher Rent. Personally it all can be solved with controls on the Borders i'm not going to open that can of worms here because there is a threat for the "Is Britain Overcrowded". The Country needs time to expand slowly and its not been given that time through one problem or another. There are more sensible things the country could do other than sacrifice our Countries natural beauty, Our farmland (Which is very efficient and supplies 60% of the population). Also a lot of that land belongs to HM Armed Forces. If you want to hear constant sounds of Gunfire go move to Gaza and leave our countryside alone. Mecky
Why build 1.5bn homes when there are around 700,000 vacant properties in the UK?
quisquose
What are the foundations under Parkhill Flats like? If we can build the 1.5bn homes on top of them, not only could we achieve Blunkett's master-plan of turning Sheffield into the world capital "City of Sanctuary", but we can solve the problem of getting space gear into orbit as well.
