Based on global power projection and being able to sustain it the royal navy would be second in any analysis. The new QE carriers will ensure it stays that way. Top 10 Military Powers of the World List 1.United States of America 2.Russia 3.China 4.India 5.United Kingdom 6.Turkey 7.South Korea 8.France 9.Japan 10.Israel The USA couldn't defeat the Viet Cong and today can't defeat Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Russian couldn't defeat the Mojahadin. We couldn't defeat the IRA and along with the Yanks can't defeat the Taliban. France got kicked out of Algeria. Israel is at constant war and has had to build a big wall to defend itself. Military hardware only gets you so far if you're on other people's land. I think pretty much every citation in your post doesn't take into account the fact that we never knew who they were!!!...It's much easier to fight someone when you know exactly who it is you're fighting and know where they are! The USA couldn't beat the Vietcong becuse they didn't know who or where they were! We don't know who is Al Queda and who isn't, the Taliban just the same. We never knew where the IRA were or who they were. We fought the Argentinians and won. But we knew where they were, who they were and what weapons they had. If the two new carriers ever get built that will continue for many years. World shipping is still controlled from London and we have the largest financial centre in the world, the 7th largest GDP and the 4th highest military budget after the US, China and Russia. You could argue it is, in the sense that we don't claim sovereignty over the islands; we just go along with the Falklanders' wishes whatever they might be. Our politicians number one priority would be to improve the lives of uk citizens instead of aiming to be a world statesman. The mods budget would be used to protect our borders against terrorists,illegal entrants,import of drugs and other smuggling activities. Our navy in particular could be of a scale to patrol our own coastal waters. It has already been so heavily cut that we cannot mount any sort of offensive operation around the world,so why bother with a token aircraft carrier. The airforce would be uk land based. Much of the army would be unnecessary although some would be re deployed as a homeland defensive army including the responsibility for border security. All troops to be pulled out of foreign soil,and no more involvement in sovereign countries.the y have the right and responsibility for self determination. Let's face it,ourselves and our leaders in america have not had a great record in their meddling since ww2. Bite the falklands bullet. the argentinians claim to the falklands is at least as good as ours,and i can't believe that asetllement could not be reached that preserves the way of life of the inhabitants. We have had our day as a world power and empire builder,but it's still a great country to live in.i just think it would be better if we concentrated on the future instead of trying to live off our past " glories" who won?
