Not enough iron in my blood??

Recommended Posts

I've just had a phone call from my doctors saying my blood tests show I have not enough iron in my blood and I need to pick a prescription up.

What are the effects of this does anyone have any information.

Are you a vegetarian? They tend to suffer from low iron and zinc levels. It can be poor diet mainly or maybe caffeine affected the count. Knock the coffee back and eat more read meat and vegetables.

Call in at the blood transfusion centre on Church Street and ask for a leaflet about foods that will boost your iron. Baked beans on toast with a drink high on vitamin C will get you off the sofa (if onto the toilet). Leafy green vegetables (spinach, brocolli), dry fruits and other things are good too.

Their website contains the following advice; "Foods such as lean red meat, poultry, fish, leafy green vegetables, brown rice, lentils and beans can all boost your haemoglobin. Vitamin C helps with iron absorption, so to get the most from the food you eat, drink a glass of vitamin C-rich fruit juice with your meal."
