Rupert_Baehr
You don't know they were pulling people over randomly. Even if they were, they're well within their rights to do so. Most people commit a crime every time they drive by not carrying with them their full paper and plastic license. Please explain?
Cyclone
Meanwhile, peoples houses are being burgled and general anti-social behavior is taking place... If you know of a burglary taking place right now then report it. I doubt you'll have a traffic officer responding to it though.
Cyclone
Please explain? He probably thinks that the police have the right to do random stops. I think he's incorrect though, they need a reason to do a stop and search...
Rupert_Baehr
Notwithstanding the abysmal weather forecast for the next 4 or 5 weeks and the destination's reputation as 'Treasure Island' or 'Ripoff Britain', it's likely that the UK will receive far more tourist visitors in July and August this year than it can expect to receive in the next hundred years. Tourists are not ordinarily welcomed in the UK - but that many, bringing that much money with them? - Somebody is surely going to think "We need to look after them."? Anybody - be it a 'real' terrorist or just a 'stupid plonker' who scares the tourists is going to end up in deep doo-doo. The security forces are, perhaps, likely to be very sensitive indeed. It's likely that they will over-react to one or two non-events, but surely that's far better than sitting back, waiting to see what happens and 'collaring' people later? By talking to a few more people than they would ordinarily do, the police may (with a lot of luck) stop a few problems which would've occurred later. Will they be getting a 500 quid bonus like the one so many people on this forum seem to think the bus drivers should get?

I suspect that whatever traffic operation it was, it has nothing to do with tourists or talking to people.
PinkJo
Police can stop any vehicle for no reason at all. A person commits an offence if he/she doesn't produce docs on an officers request, therefore people are given 7 days to produce due to people not carrying docs in case of loss or theft. alchresearch
Perhaps they've got to try harder after failing to find firearms, offensive weapons and other material were later found hidden inside a car after they did a routine stop! http://news.sky.com/story/956908/seven-terror-suspects-quizzed-after-gun-find
Obelix
You don't know they were pulling people over randomly. Even if they were, they're well within their rights to do so. Most people commit a crime every time they drive by not carrying with them their full paper and plastic license. You are not required to carry them by law - you are required to produce them when a constable requests however and it's acceptable to produce them later as soon as reasonable practicable. For example it may have been sent off for a photo to be updated, change of address, adding new category etc - so they cannot *require* you to carry them all the time. Cyclone
No, the police do not need any reason to stop any person driving, attempting to drive or in charge of a motor vehicle on a road for a routine check. The police can then require that you provide your name, date of birth, driving licence and insurance details. Failure to comply with any of these requirements is an offence. The police cannot stop a vehicle just to carry out a random breath test. I believe I was confusing the fact that they cannot stop you for a random breath test, with not being able to stop you at random. They can apparently stop a car for a random check if they wish. moabdul
Just seen 3 cars parked up on the side of the ring road in town (between West Street & Matilda Street). What are they there for? They've just pulled someone up on Matilda Street aswell.. Maybe they are looking for another islamist active service unit. Like the one they caught last week.
