melthebell
I'm not sure that this would be illegal. Technically, currency does not belong to you but to the Crown/Mint/Bank of England (I'm not sure which), much as your passport does not belong to you but is merely available for your use. That said, though, I'm not aware of any law that specifically forbids using them for other than monetary purposes. (There is such a law in the USA, but that is at least partly because - as of a few years ago - one cent coins could be sold for more than one cent each as scrap metal.) does that mean you cant use your music either then? as that apparently doesnt belong to us maybe we shouldnt be using wood either cos that belongs to the wood fairies

medusa
Defacing the image of the Queen of the Realm is treason, and punishable by death. It's as bad as killing swans IMO. No it's not. The death penalty was abolished for all offences in 1998. You can't even get it for sticking on postage stamps upside down any more.

RootsBooster
thank god for that and putting the wrong colour bottle in the wrong coloured glass recycle bin? WeX
personally I dont think it looks that good and it would be a right pain in the backside to remove if you later changed your mind considering each penny would be individually stuck down. Plenty of images found on Google image search, just Google "penny flooring". WeX
I heard that all that defacing coins of the realm bull is old hat now and you can do what you like, might be wrong though. I think its a thing of the past when coinage was actually worth what is was worth, if you get what I mean. Otherwise those machines in old seaside fun-fairs' that bend and squash coins into funny shapes would be illegal.
