Restoring old fireplace- how to make it black again?

Recommended Posts

Probably around £10 if you have to buy a blow torch to burn off the old paint and that includes the cost of the grate polish too

if its cast iron the heat will be conducted and will not lift paint.Use a wire brush or scraper, then use wire wool and finish by applying black lead.I used black shoe polish and its most effective and cheap:hihi:

ive been told i need to get it sand blasted or use nitromorse (sp)? then paint it with black paint and then buff with paste stuff???

id rather just take it somewhere for them to do it all as it sounds like a nightmare and very complicated

You can probably strip the paint with paint remover. Don't paint it. Use black lead. You can buy it in tubes or small tins.
