HeadingNorth
The first thing that springs to my mind is Hammerite paint, but that might not be the easiest, cheapest, or the most sensible way to do it.
Mecky
Probably around £10 if you have to buy a blow torch to burn off the old paint and that includes the cost of the grate polish too

DaisyBoo
ive been told i need to get it sand blasted or use nitromorse (sp)? then paint it with black paint and then buff with paste stuff??? id rather just take it somewhere for them to do it all as it sounds like a nightmare and very complicated

Don't paint it. Use black lead. You can buy it in tubes or small tins. http://www.ukclassifieds.co.uk/stovax_black_grate_polish_zebo_zip_zebrite_black_lead-o32321.html

choogling
Some old paint was lead based so be careful.
