Does the Highway Code apply on something that isn't a highway though?

I rather presumed he was on about people who walk strung out across the trail so no-one else can get past and kids that run out in front of you at random really.

The Highway Code applies on roads, footpaths and bridleways.

If kids are running about at random, it would be a good idea to stop cycling don't you think?

Years ago we used to have a device that was useful in such circumstances, called a bell, but few cyclists seem to possess one these days.

Voices work quite well - although you sometimes have to move up from a polite "excuse me".

Stopping doesn't work if you are going the same way along the trail - you'd never get past them and increase the risk they would run into you.

A better idea is to slow down, let their parents know you are there and want to get past, wait until they are moving away from you and then nip past.

The Wirral Way former railway route clearly states that walkers have more right than cyclists and the cycles should give way to walkers where necessary.

Nobody has argued the opposite.
