Always told lies, and we love it, as we do nothing..

Recently obtained documents show nearly 300 flood defence projects were left unbuilt due to the British government’s spending cuts while thousands of homes in Britain incurred tremendous damage having been flooded over recent weeks.

Documents obtained by theGuardian show work on 294 flood defence projects that were in line to receive funding never began while large swaths of the country remain on flood alert.

“The government is wringing its hands while the waters rise. The fact is that spending has decreased while flooding has increased. Spending on flooding is clearly not enough”, said Charles Tucker of the National Flood Forum.

A total of eight flood warnings and 55 flood alerts across Britain come as up to 10mm of rain an hour fell in parts of Wales, the Midlands, and East Anglia and thousands of homes were flooded, incurring hundreds of millions of pounds of damage.

Meanwhile, the Guardian reported that the 294 flood defence projects that had indicative funding in 2010 to begin work in the following two years have received no funding at all.

The spending cuts and flooded homes in Britain come as official figures show the London Olympic Games, which are to begin in nearly two weeks, will cost British taxpayers over £9 billion while independent investigations show the figure could be as high as £24 billion.

The environment agency say different saying nothing has been cancelled as I suppose they would. Can you (or the guardian) give specific examples or are just raging against the machine whilst doing precious little else ?

It would be nice if the OP give links to his/her sources instead of cutting & pasting quotes

of newspaper articles and having a general rant.

Tim Farron, president of the Liberal Democrats and local MP for Kendal, where a £325,000 scheme for the River Kent failed to materialise.

Assuming this scheme would protect 100 properties that’s only £3250 per property, so it would make sense for each property to contribute to the cost of the scheme. The more properties the scheme would protect the cheaper it is for each property.

I am responsible for protecting my property from the weather, burglary, so I don’t see why people that own properties in areas that flood shouldn't be responsible for protecting their properties from a flood, it shouldn't be down to the tax payer.

The big Sheffield flood was in 2007.

Labour lost the election in 2010.

They had three years to do these flood defence projects.

They just made the promise to spend money knowing full well they wouldn’t have the responsibility of having to find it.
