gnvqsos
Simple answer, no they shouldn't. Some people need their cars on a Sunday, and who's to decide what's a valid reason and what isn't. I have a gig this Sunday in town. I don't fancy taking a PA system on the bus. I assume that'd be ok? I'm not disabled, not technically a trader or anything like that - presumably a blanket ban would stop me using my car/van, assuming typical exceptions as aforementioned. I would supplement the car ban with a ban on live performances, even if you are a popular ventriloquist.

Moosey
The exact boundaries would obviously differ from city - city, the idea behind it is that the most congested, built up polluted areas often have the worst health problems, so we provide a day for them to relax, play, cycle, socialise, hula hoop, dance, walk or whatever exercise they want freely and safely to try and combat our health and obesity problems. I'm already really healthy - I run marathons, cycle regularly etc - does that mean I'm excused?
Where's Spot
No - public transport is appalling on Sundays. I live on a route which is very frequent during the week, but on Sundays the bus is once an hour until 11am and then once every half hour - and even then, it's often late, so you can wait 45 mins for a bus. The city centre is already dead enough on a Sunday without banning the most practical way to get there. And before anyone says - it's too far to walk - it would take me the best part of 2 hours each way - plus with a baby it's particularly impractical. Even during the week, Sheffield doesn't exactly encourage you to leave your car at home - it's cheaper for me to drive to the shops in town and pay for parking than to pay the extortionate bus fares. And I am someone who didn't even have a car until 2 years ago - I used to walk or get the bus everywhere.
southcoast
http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-18876880 An idea which is already enforced in Bogota and around a million people walk and cycle round feeling safe and get the essential exercise they need. Certain London boroughs are already looking at imposing a Sunday ban on cars and other cities could follow suite. I own a car and I would vote for this if given the chance, nothing worse on a Sunday than dodging cars everywhere in town,do as I do and leave it at home one day a week. Penistone999
Sheffield council has had a policy of doing its upmost to stop cars entering the city centre for years now ,and not just on a sunday .they do this 7 days a week ............... Its the sheffield traffic planners favorite pastime. What they do is create as many one way streets, pedrestrain zones, bus lanes and cycle lanes as possible to make it impossible for motorists to enter the heart of the city. Sheffield city council are world leaders at it .

In the interests of fairness and equality ,would you be in favour of a ban on cyclists using the roads for one day a week to give us motorists a well needed break from them . ? No becuase cyclists don't cause any problems. I would however have allow 1 day a week as a car free for all, no parking or congestion charges, no parking permits needed and you can drive in bus lanes and allowed park on all single yellows. ---------- Post added 26-12-2012 at 17:15 ---------- NO. I'm sick and tired of rules for everything these days. Leave us alone! Whats so wrong with having a car free day for everyone?
