Homicide rates down to 30 year low

Recommended Posts

What?

That's what I thought, you would have to read another thread for it to make sense. The forums sexual guru Mr Smith made this claim;. "if anything with the advent of porn rapes have dropped" by implication If porn can reduce rape I'm sure it could be applied to other aspects of crime, in fact it could have even further reaching implications.

If my wife was addicted to porn she wouldn't use my plastic in town so much. :hihi:

Unlike Mr Smith I'm not sure Suffragette1 was entirely convinced, her ironic analogy was closer to the mark than Mr Smiths claim though.

I know, you couldn't make it up. :D

Good to hear the murder rate has fallen though.

I agree although it wasn't very high anyway but don't tell the bring back hanging mob as according to them hanging is the only way to control murder.

I cant see how the internet will have influenced the murder statistics though as Suffragette1 suggested.

I was being tongue in cheek, as Ron suggested.

My guess would be that with the decline of the pub and more people drinking at home, the potential for drunken conflict leading to violence is less. So men just stay at home and beat their wives instead. That is a semi-serious comment, by the way, as if one is inclined to violent and aggressive behaviour when drunk, this could be one of the consequences. Serial killers thankfully are few and far between, although one is one too many. Two women are still killed every week by a current or former partner.

I also posted several links to the research which made the same claim.

Does pornography breed rape? Do violent movies breed violent crime? Quite the opposite, it seems.

First, porn. What happens when more people view more of it? The rise of the Internet offers a gigantic natural experiment. Better yet, because Internet usage caught on at different times in different states, it offers 50 natural experiments.

The bottom line on these experiments is, "More Net access, less rape." A 10 percent increase in Net access yields about a 7.3 percent decrease in reported rapes. States that adopted the Internet quickly saw the biggest declines.

What would be interesting is, what if the bring back hanging vote was put to the public, and not just MP's. Do you think it would be reintroduced? it would be an interesting vote, and I know how I'd vote.

I don't want to highjack this thread, however, I will just state that public awareness of the attrition rate deters women from reporting rape more than before. So it is not as simple as stating increase in the accessibility of porn = decrease in rape. It is a facile argument in my view.
