alchresearch
Microsoft earn enough money so they don't need to charge you. What does Microsoft have to do with it?
Leah-Lacie
What does Microsoft have to do with it? They provide the hotmail/windows live email addresses that are probably the most widely used?

alternageek
There used to be a charge. Prestel charged 5p per MBX (mailbox) message in 1985, which was equivalent to about a page of teletext (which is what the system display was). You could even TELEX a company for 50p. I used to pay 25 cents an email in 1989, though the first 4 emails sent from the account were FREE!
Obelix
If there was a small charge - and I mean small like perhaps 0.05p per destination address it'd knock spam on the head overnight. If your ISP gave you a thousand free emails a month I doubt most people would ever get into the charge point.
epiphany
Billions..Trillions...Zillions sent every year. Will there ever be a charge for this service? There shouldn't be - in theory the more their email service is used, the more potential advertising revenue they get.
