The Queen is remarkable.

Do you really believe that Britain could have mounted D Day and the defeat of Nazi Germany alone or would you have been happy with a negotiated peace ?

I believe we fought on the wrong side. Particulalry when I hear rubbish like the above. Start reading history.

I await your reasoned argument.

if in 1940 Lord Halifax had become Prime Minister we would have had peace with Germany within weeks.

Hitler had no ambitions in the west. He wanted Russia. We would have let him get on with it. We would have kept the empire, and command of the seas. The US was the worlds 5th most powerful country at the time and would have stayed that way.

Instead we wasted our men and money in fighting a country that up to 1900 had been our traditional ally.

The americans waited until Pearl Harbour and then Hitler had to declare war on them before they came in. The american were opportunist and took every advntage of the Brits. American prosperity and world domination was at the expense of the UK.

Now look where they are,The Brits controlled the world for 300 years and lost it fighting overwhelming odds backed by a self seeking ally, the USA. The US has been dominant for 50 years, Already they are losing it, econmoy downgraded, (Britains is not) defeated in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Overtaken by China Russia Brazil India etc, No health service, political clowns running the place, crap educational system and up to its knees in drugs, fundemental religion and guns.

A third world third rate country with an inflated sense of importance and on the way down.

Hitler had no ambitions in the west.

The invasion of Poland triggered the Saar Offensive. A Western Front was both expected and inevitable.

In your scenario, Britain would have been cut off from the rest of the world and starved out - no invasion required.

So what? France has always been our traditional enemy, Belgium and the Netherlands have never been allies of ours. The German people have always had closer ties through trade, war, and monarchy. Kaiser Wilhelm had major issues with his English mother and his paranoia led to the split with them in the early 1900s. Before that they had been a close ally.
