Bring back the Sixties

Recommended Posts

The best years of my life were the very late Fifties and the whole of the Sixties.

Bring 'em back I say!

I agree, the late 50,s, and all of the 60,s were indeed great years, there was a lot of fun to be had, lots of work for most and people were happy with their lot, sadly it's all gone downhill from there. Blame the government for making reckless decisions not in the best interests of England, will it ever recover? not in my lifetime. I still love England and always will despite this.

The 10 years from 1955 to 1965 were amazing. I grew up from 13 to 23 and it was great to witness the changes in music, cars, films, attitude etc. The Sun record label certainly had a lot to do with promoting rock n roll. Elvis, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash and many others started their recording career there.

Same age group as myself and it was the music that made the change to how we viewed life, I can still remember going to the cinema to see "Rock around the Clock" Bill Hayley and coming out and feeling totally blown away. What year would that be when the film first came out?

Mojo Club,Bell bottom Jeans with cat bells down the legs. PVC coats. Music like no other era Motown. Scooters for the Mods, bikes for the Rockers. Penthouse for drinking . Cavendish for some fantastic entertainment. Casino for the gamblers. Stonehouse for Saturday afternoon drinking after either working in the morning or shopping down the Moor. Lacarno still very popular as well for dancing. Mini cars, MGB MG Midget . Drinks that were popular for the ladies back then, Babysham, Cherry B Barley wine (lethal stuff). Holidays at places like Skegness, Cleethorpes with the girls or guys from work.

Got paid in cash, an actual wage packet. Could take your pick of a job & never left one job until you had another one to go to.

Sheffield had some real talent as well some really top groups, some made the big time others didn't but were still very talented & dedicated musicians.

Just a few of my very happy memories of the 60's in Sheffield & I always feel very lucky to have lived in Sheffield during the 60's. I think it was a fantastic place to have been able to say "Yes I was there then"

Janet, I must have been in all the places you mention, if fact if you think about it we could have been at many at the same time. I had forgotten about those drinks you mention, girl friends who drank Babycham didn't last long, I hated carrying those shallow wide brim glasses it was served in through the crowds in the pub. Barley wine, I agree dynamite but I remember the lads drinking it also. yes great times.

God babycham & Cherry B and don't forget snowballs (god) I did my drinking from 75 onwards & they were still in vogue, though perhaps not like in 60's. I do know one thing, I could never drink Barley Wine, I used to love scotch, but that stuff no :)
