He said he was poorly paid and only earned A$16.95 and hour (£11.43), so it was a big loss for him. So, £11.43 an hour? That's pretty much the minimum wage here in Oz, so yes he probably is fairly poorly paid. I've no idea how anyone copes on that money in this country!
