Conflict in Syria.

The original poster, janie48, stated that Christians had been there for centuries. She ought to have said millennia. How, exactly, does your sarcasm contribute usefully to this?

Yes she did say centuries,i see no reason for her to change that, and how exactly does your pedantic attitude and over concern with detail of accuracies contribute to this?

Turkey remains the most forward looking, and most secular, country in the region and generally most successful country in the region. A Turkish 'Kurdistan' will be nothing more than a harbour for backward Islamist medievalists. The question is, as with Syria, is not so whether a 'nation' of people has a 'right' to self-governance, but whether such self-governance has the potential tp be successful. Considering the kinds of jihadists that make up those fighting for the FSA or for an independent Kurdistan in Turkey, I seriously doubt these groups will create any long-term positive developments in the region.

There are about 2 million Kurds in Syria, and over 6 million in Iraq. That is enough to form a country bigger than Jordan (6.5 million). With the 13 million in Turkey and the 8 million in Iran (both low estimates) that is a country bigger than Syria or Iraq or Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia.

The Kurds are eyeing a Kurdistan, not more separate autonomous areas. They could do it now, with the Syrian and Iraqi parts. They have the government, the army, and oil. They are friends with Americans in both places,

That would have a drastic effect on Iran and Turkey and Iraq. Things could realign very suddenly.

So this threatens to swamp events in Syria with events of a much larger war,

the more you read about that area the more you realise how complex it is

if Turkey gives in to an invasion of Syria to stop the Kurds, the Iranians might well play the other side, with Russian help. A different major realignment is also possible, because the Iranians and Russians both have designs on a rather helpless Azerbaijan which has foolishly let itself be used as an Israeli launching pad against Iran and a forward American base against Russia. The connection is that Turkey sides with Azerbaijan against Armenia, which is located between Turkey and Azerbaijan and is a friend of Russia and Iran.:help:

Ah if only the British colonial rulers had had the foresight to see all the mess that area now is when they carved it all up after the end of the First World War

Either way, the Arabs would still be fighting and oppressing each other. It's what they do best. Blaming events 100 years ago is neither relevant nor constructive. Current international meddling has a far greater effect on current events than historical meddling does.

Need an alternative to oil and a massive change in ideology of everyone living in the region.
