Old Eckington Shops/Businesses

I left Eckington many years ago but actually lived for many many years at the "bottom end" (not a pun).

Eckington was thriving in those days with many people employed in the mines/steelworks. I know its a complete dive now but does anybody remember any of the old high st shops.

I remember:

Taggs - Tailors on the bad bend

Charlie Freemans - Motorbikes

Jack Woodheads - Barbers, one of his shops was demolished by an artic but he rose like a phoenix from the flames to administer more bad haircuts on the local schoolboys

Contd....

Woodheads - Butchers

Rowlands - Pork butchers

Bradshaws - Bric-a-brac

Jackies - Sweet shop, an absolute delight for school kids (the sweets not Jackie lol) people still called it Jackies for years after she sold it on

Calverts - another mecca of sweets at the bottom of Castle Hill

Calvers - Fishing tackle (next door to the above)

Davy's - Bakers, with a eat in area

French's - Newsagents (they only sold 'plain' crisps), brilliant.

Fox's - green grocers

Courtnalls - Haberdashery

Morgans - Everything, including bikes and air rifles

Booths - Greengrocers

Ray Walkleys - Toy shop, another awesome place for kids

Carters - Chip shop with miserable owners

Roger French's - Ironmongers, the only one thats survived intact

Baumforths - Tv sales and repairs (next to the post office)

I'm sure there are many many more, hard to believe how many good shops Eckington actually had (dont get me started on the pubs), most are now takeaways/charity shops which is a great shame.
