  • 9 months later...

A friend of mine told me there was a forum on BW. I was intrigued. I am the youngest son of Dennis. He is still hanging in there BTW .... 90 next birthday but he has Alzheimers. I worked at BW in the school holidays and used to go out with some of the girls there. My brother worked there for a time also. I suppose there must be quite a few ex BW guys and girls around.Anyway Good luck to you all!

Hi PJKAY

I also bought a leather jacket from BW, naturally we used to get a staff discount. I paid twenty six pounds for my full length maroon leather jacket in 1965 which back then was a fortune. But it was really a beautiful jacket. I gave it to a girlfriend when she emigrated to Canada about 8 years later. Often wished I hadn't as even though I live in Brisbane Australia, I lived in Melbourne for a few months & could have used it then.

West Bar & Shalesmoor areas back then were busy industrial areas .

You will be telling me next that you used to knock off work Saturday morning & drink in the Stonehouse like we girls used to from BW's haha.

No I worked on Saturdays..Worked at a used car showroom on shalesmoor.Called Motormyles. Went for a lunchtime drink to The Cream Horn on London road Near to Wenningers Pork shop///Sandwich from them or fish and chips...The pub used to let us take them in and eat. Went to Rhodesia in 1972..been in Africa ever since...Last time in Sheffield was 2006 after 25 yrs...Didnt know my way around,,Still here in cape town..Spent a year in Perth 1979...Wouldnt let me stay..Too many boat people n the queue.

Hope you are all fine

Hi Bullerboy

Yes I remember Harry Raven, he would no doubt remember Rita Fewkes who was Adam Machattie's secretary & then when Pat Goddard left Rita worked in reception with me. He will remember names like David Brough, Tom Travis. John (can't remember his surname, nice quiet young man who had an equally quiet little blonde girlfriend who also worked there. The other John (Tempest) lovely guy. It was a great place to work. Mr Denis & Mr Eric were tough bosses but I always found them fair & respected them both.

I see a post by Mrs Denis's son which is nice to read & how amazing that Mr Denis is still around, thats great. Your dad would still have been there when I left after a couple of years (fell out with Mr. Machattie). But I enjoyed working there. So many names I still remember & I am still in touch with Rita Fewkes. Both Mr Denis & Mr Eric drove cars with the rego DS1 & ES1.

Those certainly were the days.

Hi Bullerboy. How lovely to hear that Harry is still going strong. He probably won't remember me as I was only 16 when I started work there, but I do remember Harry (he was very liked & respected) If you mention any of the names I posted, to Harry I am sure he will remember them. Also there is a post a little earlier about Arnold Carr who also worked there when Harry did. It was a happy place to work, everyone got along well & used to socialise outside work . The Christmas parties were always good . I see a post from one of Mr Denis's sons on here also. I remember the boys but they were very young when I worked there...lively little fellas haha.

Please mention this post to Harry as I am sure he will be pleased to know he is remembered after all these years.Thinking back to where I worked in the front office by the front doors it was always freezing in winter & Rita & I used to be closed in a tiny office with a little two bar electric heater sitting on the floor. Wow can you imagine workplace health & safety allowing that nowadays.

Hi Janet, I told Harry and he vaguely remembers you but he certainly remembers the other names.Harry always fitted my carpets in every house ive lived in even my present one but now his son Chris has taken the reigns off him.Did he tell all the crap jokes when he worked there? He cant walk very good now so i am having to work hard to convince him to get an electric mobility scooter. Was a Sylvia Harvy there then?
