Nick Clegg demands emergency tax on Britain's wealthiest

Can't see this proposal coming to pass in a month of Sunday's to be honest.

Britain's wealthiest people should face an emergency tax to avoid a breakdown in social cohesion as the country fights an "economic war" caused by a longer than expected recession, Nick Clegg has said.

In the first interview by a senior member of the cabinet to mark the new political season, the deputy prime minister told the Guardian he is embarking on a battle to persuade his Tory coalition partners of the need to ensure the rich shoulder a greater burden of the economic pain.

"If we are going to ask people for more sacrifices over a longer period of time, a longer period of belt tightening as a country, then we just have to make sure that people see it is being done as fairly and as progressively as possible," Clegg said.

"While I am proud of some of the things we have done as a government I actually think we need to really hard-wire fairness into what we do in the next phases of fiscal restraint. If we don't do that I don't think the process will be either socially or politically sustainable or acceptable."

Even if it did, the net effect would simply be to drive still further wealthy people away and/or engage in further tax efficiency planning. Just like Hollande's budget did in France earlier this month. The winners, as usual, will be the legal/financial advisers.

Surely you are not so gullible as to still fall for the nonsense about how we need the wealthy and they will all leave the country. :hihi:

If you would care to do some research you will find that more wealthy people have left the country in the last year than ever before, even though Ozzy has given them a massive tax cut, paid for by the rest of us.

Thanks for vindicating my opinion :hihi:

I think you missed the "still further" bit in my post

How did Clegg vote on the reduction of the 50p tax. (for those on over 150k)?

I have never known anyone else that shoots himself in the foot everytime he opens his mouth like this man does.

The poor chap must have his own foot surgeon, but i am beginning to warm to him.

All he needs is a straight man feeding him lines to deliver and he'll make a good living as a stand up comedian.......oh hang on.........

Even if it was "considered" by the Govt it wouldn't make it through because Cameron's puppet masters aka "the rich" wouldn't allow it. The same as Cameron moaned about those using tax loophole to avoid tax. How much has he done to close them? So far nothing because all his mates are using those same loopholes and he will be too once he's ousted from office.
