Graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms

Recommended Posts

Graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, wondering when they can move out and get going with their life...

Everyone who feels stuck in the current economy is right to focus on the here and now, and I hope you understand this, if you feel left out and passed by, you have not failed, your leaders have failed you.

Do you agree?

And really why should their parents have to put up with them lounging around the house emanating negative vibes and expecting to be waited on hand and foot without actually contributing anything ... just to act as Devil's Advocate.

Surely they can go and share a house with other young people, or go travelling and pick up work here and there. Dig potatoes, pick flowers etc? Go out and do something more interesting instead?

It's about time people stopped moaning and expecting to be given money, get out and make a life, fgs!

Because a NIMBY group opposed a local employment and wealth production facility, because dwellings were opposed, because industries left and housing was demolished...

Because the jobs (and more importantly) the ability to create them aren't there. Profitability may be low - so foreign capital is not interested in funding and extracting a yield, but self starters could and would make profit. They would create work (and capital) with labour.

It's all good saying dig up potatoes, but you have to plant them first - and there is sod all access to land. Look at the allotment waiting list. Lots of people are willing to grow food!

We need capital formation, and we have surplus labour that wants to form it, but the homegrown labour is priced out.

The excuse for farmers importing cheap foreign labour is that British people are too lazy and lack motivation to do the work, the fruit and veg are already planted. The main reason British people are too lazy and lacking motivation is because we still give them money to live on whether they work or not.

If the alternative was starving and sleeping in a box, the majority of these idle workers would be out there digging potatoes. In fact, it was what students used to do in the holidays to get some money for the next term.

People are sick and tired of listening to these drones moaning about how they should be given the best houses in the best suburbs, and live on the fat of the land, without ever expecting to have to pay for it.

And yes, you're right, successive (Labour) Governments are to blame, for allowing false expectations to overcome the realities of life.

Come off it, I've worked in food production (English and foreign workers, majority under 30) - the amount of jobs is shrinking all the time - there is a bit of precarious work in the summer and autumn months picking veg.

If the work was there, if not they would revolt, and many have done so in the past few years. (Mainly in the Arab countries)

Agriculture as an employment sector isn't going to be able to create 9.3 million jobs in this country. Not unless we have a lot more small farms that focus on land productivity... And even then we could massively increase food production and still not create enough jobs.

Who has said that?

The reality is people in countries supposedly far poorer than us have decent housing that is cheaper and of a better standard than ours.

I agree that we won't be able to create enough jobs for the amount of people we have here, so obviously what we need is fewer people. Continuing to import people when we don't have enough houses, services or jobs for those we already have here, is ridiculous.

Once we get over the blip of the baby boomers which can only be another 20 years tops, we'd probably be ok.

We can house and feed people no problem.

Being able to produce in abundance is not a problem. It is a good thing.

We can build millions of home and still have high unemployment, we can also increase food production and still have high unemployment. We can provide even more services and still have high unemployment.

High population isn't stopping us from increasing the amount of houses, food produced and services.

Perhaps we should reduce the working week and share the hours around?
