People don't vote for the good of the state, they vote for what they can personally get. If you add up the self interest of everyone in this country together you end up with the national interest, and our government is meant to work in the national interest. Which is why it will be interesting to see the changes in the cabinet reshuffle to be announced in the next parliament. I bet Cameron keeps Osbourne, because he needs a scapegoat.
