General Post Office, Fitzalan Square- its future?

Recommended Posts

the sad thing is looking at the building today, roof slates falling off or been broken off needs sorting definitely rain will get in and ruin the interior plasterwork on the lower levels.can the developers not pull their fingers out and get the place fixed and occupied.

Sheffield City Council has sanctioned the demolition of older buildings than this one. Victorian architecture is like yesterday to a council that had a Georgian house, constructed in hand made brick, demolished to make way for the entrance to the town hall car park (next door to Starbucks).

My guess is that they are waiting for the old post office to be declared unsafe, have a look at what is going to go if Sevenstone ever goes ahead, this council will demolish anything.

On Monday there was a JCB in the courtyard, clearing all the rubble. It's all gone now, and the contractors have erected hoarding all around the courtyard, and along the line of cast iron pillars supporting the building above. No signs up that I could see, but something is obviously afoot.

There has to be preservation notices implemented by the heritage trust otherwise most of our heritage regarding these lovely old buildings would be lost forever, some people have no idea of what Historical Architecture is and that dosen't mean having to go back Centuary's.....we seem to be able to erect large buildings within a few weeks from start to finish,Square, oblong shapes that are without any character, most of them straight up and down,no challenging craftsmanship involved..A fred Dibnar nightmare as he knew a Great building that had been built by Craftsmen when he saw one and he would have preserved them if he had been able too.
