bazjea
Who actually owns the old GPO building? Is it still owned by the Post Office, the City Council, was it sold to some property developer a few years ago. It is no good blaming anyone for its condition until someone comes up with the definitive owner.
SweetonSoul
Much Potential in this historic site - sadly Shefield council seem sadly lacking in making sure that our city matches up to the competition especially Leeds and Manchester which quite literally are streets ahead:suspect: ATB MC
melthebell
There are two potential gems in our city centre and both are squares: Paradise Square, which is nothing more than a car park; & Fitzalan Square, which with a bit of imagination and investment could and should become the public square this city desperately needs. I am sure that in any other city, the beautiful GPO would be transformed into a centre piece, be it by way of converting it into shops, an arcade, a hotel or civic building. Perhaps an art gallery or museum. Even a decent tourist centre. The square needs ripping out, redesigning but in an open way, not cluttered with 'street furniture'. It could make a lovely place for bars and coffee shops which should be policed or marshalled. Flowerbeds, a large screen - perhaps on one of the less attractive buildings, imaginative lighting, maybe a fountain. A place where the citizens of this city cone together for civic receptions and anniversaries. Transport links are excellent: train- and bus-stations are a five minute walk away; the tram passes by and Arundel Gate and the Cheese Grater car parks are also nearby. The Crucible and Lyceum Theatres are nearby also. It sounds too good to be true but the council as per usual sit idly by doing sweet FA!! if we were the on the continent Fitzallan Square would be a first class attraction the lovely old building that is the old post offeice would be restored into a boutique hotel and we would have bars and cafes in the square with outdoor seating bar/cafe culture (like barcelona) in the square as it could be really lovely instead we have 2nd rate kiosks and boring tacky shops surrounding it, the city planners need a kick up the a**e sounds nice instead theres a cash shop and bookies
Bypassblade
This council is responsible for more vandalism of this city's buildings than the Luftwaffe were ever capable of doing. An outcry would make no difference; they will carry on regardless. I think it would be best to say, all previous councils, come on the GPO has been shut donkeys years, even you can't blame the council for the state of it:)
Nagel
Problem with Barkers Pool is it's on a gradient. The recent Jess Ennis reception proved what a poor place Barkers Pool was to hold such an event. The stage was at the top end which made viewing difficult for youngsters and short folk. The gradient on Barkers Pool can be turned into an advantage if the stage is sited in the right place, at the bottom of the gradient. The stage at the Tramlines event was sited at the bottom end, so why not the EnnisFest?

LeMaquis
What the hell does this have to do with the OP's post? Because if the Ennisfest stage had been at the bottom end of Barker's Pool people could have looked down the side of it, down Fargate, down the High Street, round the corner at Fitzalan Square and bemoaned the state of the old Post Office building before slagging the council off for spending money on Jessica Ennis rather than on Sheffield's historical architecture. Obvious.

It lies there in a state of disrepair and has done for years. 'This council' relates to SCC today, tomorrow and most definitely, yesterday.
