And Allah knows and you know not.” (2:216) “Fight… the People of the Book(christians and jews) until they pay the poll tax out of hand, having been humbled.” (9:29) "And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their saying with their mouths. They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved of old. Allah (Himself) fighteth against them. How perverse are they!" (30) “Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by God and His Apostle, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth”. Tell me how would you interpret these verses ? Interpret them, using what? The exegesis or the hermeneutics? Surely when analysing any scripture you have to do so using how it applied at the time it was revealed (the Exegesis) and, how it is extrapolated, to apply today. I am failing as a non believer in owt to understand if the Exegesis is the right translation or the hermeneutics is ??? Which is the correct English translation of the Qu ran ?? You mean "Scripturally". In most languages being translated, you will find words that don't translate precisely. It's the thing about language. If you are studying scripture, then you have to take both the exegesis and the hermeneutics. It's not a case of translating one versus the other. It's about understanding what the scripture meant as it applied back then, and as it applies now. for example, the verses that many anti Islam-ites quote about warring against the unbelievers, are interpreted as what justifies the idiots who go suicide bombing. They aren't taken with an understanding of the time they were revealed that there was a conflict going on between the Muslims and the people who did not follow Islam, and how that conflict was reflected in the society of 1400 years ago.. or the ban in Islam against what is termed "Haraam" (eg intoxicants) it does not specifically say "this drug" or "that drug" (apart from Alcohol) or smoking, but the scriptures tell is "Not to throw ourselves into destruction" (IE do that which will injure our health) so, by extrapolation, smoking etc does harm to us (and others) and we ought not to do it.
