Should online porn be an opt-in service?

Recommended Posts

The government have been holding a consultation about whether Internet Service Providers should block online porn unless the user opts in to receive it.

Those in favour of such a change cite the ready availibilty of porn to children and teens - and the possibility of children accidentally stumbling across such material.

Those against include the inventor of the internet Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the service providers and groups including Big Brother Watch, Open Rights Group and Index on Censorship who felt that "Blocking is trivial to circumvent and it is likely a default blocking system would lull parents into a false sense of security...

A more complex, connected world needs parents to engage more with their children on issues of safety, privacy and personal development."

I think it should be upto the parents to set the parental controls. Computers are usually bought by adults and you have to be over 18 to have a broadband contract so thats why its not blocked like with payg mobile phones. Even if they did make you opt in, whats to stop you using a proxy ?

I think it should be an opt-in service, and out, and in, and out ....

Sorry.

:hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:

This goverment would love to control the web. Cameron has stated he hates the 24 hour news channels, he cant keep up with who is slagging him off. :hihi:

The web frees poor sods who live in Dictatorships, it is their contact with the outside world.

I'm afraid porn is an unwelcome/wecome ?? aspect to it. All providers do parental controls, is that not enough ??

What about online violence which is perhaps more corrosive than pron,which can damage the ability to spell.

Who gets to decide what is inappropriate content? Clearly nobody is going to look at every single webpage to see if it is porn so they'll be using keyword filtering that will block as many non-porn websites, such as webpages about biology, as they will porn sites. And once the system is in place it's very easy for additional keywords to be quietly added to the list.

This is just the latest attempt by the usual suspects to impose their views on morality on to everyone else. It's almost funny how this started out in the Daily Mail considering the number of half naked women that grace their own website...

If parents are so worried about what their kids have access to then they should actually use the content controls that come as standard on computer and web browsers rather than steering us down the Chinese web censorship route.

It's already opt in. Just like this forum, supermarkets, strip clubs etc. You still have to 'visit' all these places. This is a ridiculous proposal from a load of idiots who have no idea how to operate their parental controls and so no idea how difficult it would be to impose accurately and effectively.
