Should online porn be an opt-in service?

Recommended Posts

Yeah getting isp's to block porn would stop kids looking at it, look what a fine job was done blocking pirate bay. No one in Britain uses pirate bay now.

It's all just a waste of time and effort even trying to block anything on the Internet, even a retarded chimp can get around any block.

you are actually quite right with blocking. I'm on virgin media and a quick google search as enabled me to go to piratebay through a proxy. Not that I want to download anything illegal just seeing if I can.

Which means self regulation is probably the best option such as having the computer in a communal room where kids can be watched. The oldfashioned methods of monitoring are still the best.

You either have a free society or you have cencorship.

You either have independent adults free to make their own life choices or you have state guidance, interference, censorship.

The terrorisim issue and its considerations makes censorship inevitable AND to many an acceptable trade off in order to remain safe. The fact that some view as having nothing to hide makes such state intrusion acceptable.

Pornography is a subject for the British that they are ill prpeared to discuss due to a high level of inhibition and sexual unease. Simply, we are uncomfortable discussing it. Also, the view that anyone is a pervert for viewing porn [of any kind] doesn't help a rational discussion.

Simply, I think the argument boils down to the 'on-off' button. But that remains unacceptable because it underlies the personal freedom issue at a time when state surveilance has never been greater.

There is an erosion of freedom and personal choice but that is due to the times in which we live and the threat posed to UK citizens by terrorists.

Personally, I think the issue of porn is a secondary one and lacking importance.

The government have been holding a consultation about whether Internet Service Providers should block online porn unless the user opts in to receive it.

Those in favour of such a change cite the ready availibilty of porn to children and teens - and the possibility of children accidentally stumbling across such material.

Those against include the inventor of the internet Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the service providers and groups including Big Brother Watch, Open Rights Group and Index on Censorship who felt that "Blocking is trivial to circumvent and it is likely a default blocking system would lull parents into a false sense of security...

A more complex, connected world needs parents to engage more with their children on issues of safety, privacy and personal development."

What do you think?

Most mobile internet providers ask customers to confirm their age with a credit card before unblocking 'adult' sites (not always porn; all kinds of sites can be classed as 'adult'). I can't see a problem if all internet providers took a similar approach, although I don't think it would prevent reasonably savvy kids from accessing 'adult' content through other routes.

Incidentally; why is it wrong for adolescent kids to see 'mainstream' porn?
