cgksheff
http://www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/universal-credit-faqs.pdf What about claimants who cannot get online or use a computer? Universal Credit has been designed so that claimants can personally manage their claim directly through an online account. However, claimants who cannot access the internet or use a computer will be helped to complete their online claim for Universal Credit. This may be in a high street outlet or via a telephone service. For claimants who require a little bit more support, face to face help and a one to one telephone service will be available and an adviser will complete an online form on the claimant’s behalf, checking for accuracy as they proceed. Utter Rubbish! Benefit 'phonelines' are a universal joke- in general they are impossible to use to actually get through to someone. That's a complete fob-off, and, if any one doubts it- ring a benefits number and see how long it takes to get any help.

onewheeldave
I renew my Tax Credits by phone ... without any problems nor undue waiting time. Tax credits vary- often the lines are usable, but, when it gets close to renewal time, they are notoriously bad. Try ringing a jobcenter and see how good their phone system is

Cyclone
Leave the abusive relationship that you describe. It's not the states job to manage everyone's relationships, in the situation you describe the solution is to leave that person.
Titanic99
Why don't you think that you'll end up better off, that's the entire point of the universal credit, to ensure that working pays. Surely you can achieve the second objective but not be better off. If you cut the benefit level then you'll be better off working but no better off financially. Titanic99
True, but that isn't what's being done is it. The truth is we don't know. I work in this environment and you try and get a government minister to give you a Universal Credit calculation and I'd to wager you won't get one. So given that a fair few Benefits have already been cut then it isn't unreasonable to assume that this will be the case. The alternative viewpoint is even more interesting and that is if "Universal Credit" incentivises people to work, then there's a very big risk that it de-incentivises those people who are currently just above tax-credit levels and you could well find that they are as well off working less hours. A conundrum that will make or break IDS's career.
