Remind me never to use you as a handyman.....I would guess that one cable will be live and the other neutral. Hopefully no current will be flowing in the neutral... I qualified as an electrician over 40 years ago and I can assure you that the current flowing in the live is exactly the same as in the neutral, this is how earth leakage devices work, by checking for the slightest difference in the two.
