sedith
The Vectra C 1.9 CDTi diesels are good cars, many used as taxis, 20k between servicing and long lived engines if looked after. They do a hatch called the Signum or the there is of course the estate version. Prices are around your budget for late (ish) models

alchresearch
Avoid British/french Any valid reason why? Incidentally, any comment on all the recalls over the past two years from Honda, Nissan and Toyota? Just two of dozens of news reports: Honda recalls 321,000 cars after faulty locks mean doors could come open WHILE DRIVING http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2176155/Honda-recalls-321-000-cars-faulty-locks-mean-doors-come-open-WHILE-DRIVING.html Honda recalls 313,000 cars on airbag concerns http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15998605

Not many British manufacturers left. I wonder why.

alchresearch
Yes, they make and sell a lot more cars So because they make more cars means its ok for them to be sold faulty? The British car industry went into decline for many reasons, reliability was just one small factor amongst bad management, outdated ideas and competition. Vauxhall make many of their cars at Ellesmere Port. Should they be excluded because they're made in Britain? And if so what about the UK plants of Nissan and Honda?
