mmitchell
As far as i know you can tax your car if you have got a valid mot http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069671
denlin
Actually your friend is correct but think it may be a month not 14 days.
Priorylady
I have my tax renewal in front of me, it only states a current MOT certificate is needed, it does not specify length of remaining MOT. Thats as much as I know

cgksheff
Sorry OPs friend is correct and you are mistaken Nope. You are mistaken. Assuming that the Tax is due to start 1st October and the existing MOT is valid until the 6th October. The OP can get a new tax disc tomorrow. .... or tonight if they want to do it online. They could even get a new tax disc as late as 5th October.

cgksheff
Sorry my mistake, think I may be have been thinking of insurance not MOT But, again, insurance has only to be valid on the day the tax starts. The problem could arise if your tax was expiring at the end of September and your MOT/Insurance was expiring on 25th September. You can't get round it by trying to renew on the 15th September. .... because the MOT/Insurance, while still valid on the 15th, would have expired before the day the new tax started.
