Obelix
That explains a lot. I was watching it from the outskirts of Worksop. Perhaps I should have chosen a more middle class venue to watch from:D Never mind. This one will be visible during the day. Heralding the second coming and then the end of the world. Those Mayans should have counted more carefully. One year or so out in 6000 odd, I mean you have to cut them some slack...:-)
Fivetide
I was living Devon when Hale Bopp visited and the view of it from Dartmoor was breathtaking. Yah - I was out in the middle of Lincolnshire for that one and it was awesome. Seriously freaking uber.

quisquose
Comet Ison caught on film by Deep Impact craft http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21352427 A comet likely to light up the skies later this year has been filmed from afar by the Deep Impact spacecraft. Comet Ison was only discovered in September 2012 by Russian astronomers. Its path will put it spectacularly close to the Sun in November and if it does not burn up entirely, could be the "comet of the century".
Vague_Boy
GSo that's two comets to look forward to next year now, and one of them possibly a once in a civilization event! Cool. Although comets have been traditionally viewed as portents of doom!

Anarchon
Comet ISON is expected to slingshot around the sun on 28 November. If it survives being ripped to shreds by the sun, it should become very bright during December and January when it heads out of the inner solar system. BBC News have a good article on what to expect plus where to observe it.
