SteveG1
There's three close together in the Playacar area of Playa del Carmen (I used to live and work there about 6 years ago and visited more recently on hols) The two beach hotels are the 5 star Riu Palace which is excellent, then there's the 4 star Yucatan on the beach which is decent but not as good as the RIU Tequila over the road which is a fantastic hotel and though it's not on the beach it's two minutes on the back of a regular golf buggy service and you can use the facilities at The Yucatan hotel when down there. Hope this helps

dongle
we booked the yucatan next april mainly due to the beachfront location, we have just been informed that they are closing this hotel next year for upgrading and we have been given an upgrade to the palace riviera maya, they are closing nearly all of there hotels in mexico next year one after the other for upgrading so before you decide on a hotel make sure its going to be open during your stay. neeeeeeeeeek
Aren't the all on the same massive beach? That's what it seemed like when I was there. Not that you could swim as the sea was so rough it was too dangerous!

The tequila isn't beach front and is one of the cheaper Riu hotels in Mexico mainly due to the fact it isn't beachfront, we were looking at this hotel and decided to pay a little more for the Yucatan, we were then upgraded to the palace riviera maya which if we had have booked this was around £1000 more than the Yucatan.
