chem1st
I'm surptised the 25% figure isn't higher. Surely the point is are they decent landlords? Fair and equitable rents? House in decent nick etc? I'm sure the newspapers would be onto it if they weren't... You have to remember many of these people also own vast chunks of land via offshore trusts/companies (and claim CAP payments), without having their land registered via the land registry. And rent the land out to tenant farmers (who are increasingly being forced out of the market).
chem1st
What is so bad about private landlords. ? two of my student let properties were badly run down when i bought them at auction , both of which had been stood empty for a while ,and needed money spending on them to bring them back to a habitable standard. I spent the money required ,and brought two houses back to life . There are plenty of houses stood empty that just need a few thousand spending on them , a general re-fit ,and they will be fit for people to live in . If buy to let was made illegal thousands of properties would stand empty and be taken out of the housing market overnight ,as a vast amount of property is bought by Buy to let landlords to rent out. If you bought an did up a property with your own cash without any leverage, it wouldn't be as bad. A least with any ex council properties, the council should be doing this themselves. 8% of RTB properties are now in the hands of private landlords and this number is rising. If buy to let was illegal, house prices would be reduced and people could buy and do up their own houses instead of being forced to rent. Landlords are parasites. If you really wanted to use your money and make a fair profit out of providing housing, you would build to let.

chem1st
Without a doubt, its the way forward. Ok , my small buy to let portfolio dosnt compare to the MP with 26 house he owns , but it gives me a good standard of living none the less. At the expense of everyone else. We need to radically alter planning so that people are free to build their own homes. We need to stop forcing people into the PRS at their expense to the advantage of parasites. Competition is what is needed. Then only the good landlords would be able to survive and prosper, by providing a good service to willing customers.
