Speeding fine Renishaw

Im surprised some on here havnt called for him to be Hung for such a heinous crime against society.

39MPH, its hardly breaking the land speed record is it.

It's not, but it is breaking the law.

If you put the speed limit up to 40mph you can bet your last pound they would break that too.

No it isn't.

A sanctimonious response to 39 in a 30 would be finger-wagging and would achieve nothing.

A more useful scientific, laws of physics response to it would point out that a video often used on speed awareness courses sets up a scenario where a car is driven at 30, 32, 35 and 40 on a flat, dry, high-grip road surface. The car is a well-maintained and the driver is primed to brake at a fixed point.

The 30mph brakes and stops at point x.

The same car at the different speeds carries on through that same point because of the extra speed before braking.

Impact speeds at point x: 11, 18, 26 mph (broken legs, ditto and head injury, body into orbit respectively with increasing mortality risk).

Message from this? Speed choices matter even though we are not talking land-speed records. They matter even more since how many drivers know exactly when they need to brake, how many dry, flat, high-grip road surfaces are there on our roads and how many drivers have checked tyre pressures and have any idea what tread they have (and what tread does and when it stops doing it)?
