It looks like UK car manufactures are on target to break production records in the next 2/3 years.

New car sales in the European Union have fallen for the 12th month in a row in September, according to the region's biggest carmakers.

Demand across the 27 European Union countries fell 10.8% from last year.

But of the major markets, the UK was the only one to grow, up 8.2% from the same month last year, said the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

It seems strange that they're increasing production but at the same time having shutdowns for a week:

One swallow does not make a summer and one factory does not make an industry.

New car sales accelerated last month, continuing a trend which has seen Britain's car industry accelerating faster than Europe's this year and reach record production levels, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The lure of the new 62 number plates saw 359,612 new registrations in September - a 8.2 per cent rise on September last year.

Sales for the year so far have reached more than 1.62million - a healthy 4.3 per cent increase on the January-September total in 2011.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: 'The important September plate change market outperformed expectations.

'Although the economic outlook remains challenging, we are starting to see a tentative return of consumer confidence as motorists explore new products and the latest fuel-efficient technologies.'

New car registrations have grown every month bar one this year, and September volumes were 26,112 units (7.8 per cent) better than even the forecast.

Although the market remains well below pre-recession levels - in the first nine months of 2007 1.94million cars were registered - the SMMT claimed in a separate recent report that vehicle production is on track to rise by 9 per cent each year for the foreseeable future, fuelled by exports to 150 countries.

That would propel car production to those pre-recession levels this year, and towards a record 2.2million cars by 2016 – exceeding the 1.92million cars achieved back in 1972.

It sure beats paying folk £2 grand to scrap their car and buy a Korean built Hyundai.
