chem1st
Question is though until if / we ever do build more then surely those most in need should be proritised? They already are. We should build enough to clear the waiting lists.
mediumfast
If it was about a Conservative MP would it make the news? Again if they were deemed eligible then its not news!

geared
I thought it was the house he grew up in, therefore eligibility is not a question. Unless you agree people should be evicted once they earn over a certain threshold? As long as he's paying market rate for the house thats ok isn't it? tinfoilhat
As he's effectively stopping a low income family benefiting from a very scarce resource, I'd say he needs to his big bags of money to an estate agent and buy a house.
Ms Macbeth
Whether or not anyone 'deserves' a council house has little to do with them getting one. It isn't as if Bob Crowe has only recently taken up his tenancy, he's been there a long time. Legally he has every right to stay in the property as council houses are normally let on secure tenancies. Morally, I think he should consider people who really need affordable housing, probably some of his union members! However, I do give him credit for not buying it, as he could easily afford to. At least when he no longer lives in it someone who needs an affordable rented home will benefit.
mediumfast
Prior to taking up his position as leader of the country the last great Labour leader Harry Perkins lived on The Kelvin ,as I recall this was looked on as a virtue .
robcalder
If people want to live in a council house it is fine. Most people fall for the trap of ownership to make money. The concept of public housing is a noble one and if done to a high standard could become the norm. The sale of houses in the 1980s has reduced the stock of housing especially in desirable locations rendering social housing a last resort rather than a first choice as in Turkmenisten Lithuania and North Korea. What is the second preference in the countries you mention?
