Kevin McCabe: Best chairman?

I was sat thinking about the healthy state of our (Uniteds) finances and how we've become a very progressive club, both in terms of our financial situation and our approach to the game.

I realised that whilst Warnock has done a great job with the team it has been McCabe and his staff that have really transformed the club.

He always comes across as a very forthright and honest man and his hard work at Bramall Lane is sometimes overlooked.

Anyone else think we may have the best Chairman in the country?

I don't think we can really grumble about McCabe, I mean ok he's been slow at releasing funds for transfers, but that is understandable considering our financial position a couple of yrs ago!

I tend to think that he's a shrewd businessman, he now has accumalated a profit and is willing to invest bk into the club to further us!

I did my degree dissertation on Sheffield United as a PLC three years ago now and managed to interview Kevin McCabe for an hour (the day we beat Sunderland in the League Cup). He came over as a very enthusiastic and ambitous leader of the club.

One observation he did make that stuck in my mind was that he talked about the Wednesday general manager from the early 60's (Eric Taylor) and how he had a vision for his club to push them forward on the national stage and to be the number one club in the city ie they built the North Stand and West Stand in preperation for the World Cup, had FA cup semi-finals staged there, etc, etc. And in many ways we've been playing second fiddle to them ever since, until maybe the last five years.

From what McCabe said at the time he had similar ambitions for United, and i think we are now just starting to reap the benefits of that ie the development of the corner stands at the Lane, the office development in the BL/JS corner, community sports hall, academy at Shirecliffe, developments in the far east and future plans for the Kop, Hotel and Casino.

I wrote a letter to him in the summer tovoice my concerns about retaining Warnock as manager (what a fool I was).

He was kind enough to ring me to explain the boards decision and he was very enthusiastic about the future.

I think we're at the begining of some exciting times at the Lane!!
