chem1st
http://www.rsc.org/Chemsoc/Activities/IYC/MajorProjects/catalytic-clothing.asp Catalytic Clothing is a radical project that brings together the worlds of fashion and chemistry with the potential to clean the air we breathe. Employing existing technology in a new way, it seeks to explore how clothing and textiles can be used as a catalytic surface to purify air. It is the brainchild of artist / designer Professor Helen Storey MBE and chemist Professor Tony Ryan OBE - people from very different worlds whose minds have come together over recent years in highly successful art/science collaborations. The world can view a full length CatClo film online which is expected to reach an audience of millions worldwide through social media and websites. This campaign continue with a series of cultural and art interventions that will bring this forth coming technology into the public domain, to engage and shape our world for the better. (Tony Ryan is based at the University of Sheffield). They reckon that if 50% of the people in Sheffield wore jeans coated in Titanium Dioxide that Nitric oxide levels could be reduced by 20% over the year. These clothes can also clean themselves! Obviously they foresaw the closing town of Comet and the obvious knock on effect of lack of washing machines in the near future.

monkey104
I've just serviced my car and I am afraid no amount of Titanium Dioxide coating would have protected them! Nitric Oxide levels will be soaring once I chuck em in the washer. Sorry
Parvo
saw about these on the telly-the pollution in the air sticks to the surface and then it gets washed off- but no one explained why that didn't mean that the pollutants were not being simply transferred into the water/sewage system hence making that (more) contaminated. would these chemicals just be easier to at blackburn meadows or something? chem1st
saw about these on the telly-the pollution in the air sticks to the surface and then it gets washed off- but no one explained why that didn't mean that the pollutants were not being simply transferred into the water/sewage system hence making that (more) contaminated. would these chemicals just be easier to at blackburn meadows or something? The article is in Chemistry world, published by the RSC - subscription only £71 a year. Basically; The titanium dioxide particle absorbs photons, mainly in the UV (ultraviolet), that excite an electron (e'). excited e' reacts with oxygen (O2) to make singlet oxygen (O). O reacts with water present in the air to make peroxy radicals, peroxy radicals react wi owt! They transform nitric oxide into nitric acid which then makes a water soluble nitrate salt, they also turn volatiles into oxygenated molecules that are water soluble. These water soluble compounds are removed in the washing machine and go through the sewage network to blackburn meadows. They nasty chemicals wouldn't go to blackburn meadows though, unless we first captured them on our specially adapted clothing. We would just be breathing them in - and stuff like NO2 makes tobacco smoke look healthy healthy healthy. The special coating works best on cotton, but also works very well on wool. The titania in the coating costs about 10 pence, and the coating doesn't adversely affect the coating. The technology is already ready to market for spray on. But they are hoping to get it put into laundry detergent instead (if they were to add it in the manufacturing process - they basically do a wash with the titania after manufacturing). chem1st
and is it easy to neutralise there It is converted in the treatment process. It can be released as nitrogen gas into the atmosphere (there should be lmits on this though - dose is the poison so to speak; none- bad, some- good, lots- bad), or it can be converted into fertilizer pellets and SOLD. Fertilizer can be used by people growing food on allotments. (If they could get one in the first place )

(If they could get one in the first place ) there are plenty of unlet allotments in sheffield - they need clearing of undergrowth and rubbish.....and there are plenty of community initiatives.. so you can grow your own food if you want...... and how long ave you been on the list, if you are at all.....
