We are one!!!

That's right Dalen Light is one year old. It doesn't seem two minutes since a semi drunk Carl and Nic were hob knobbing it up at Nonna’s armed with a pad of paper and pen, jotting down thoughts and ideas that often lead to incomprehensible doodles.

 

A year on and we have had the privilege of working with the likes of Collect, Cargo, Delve Deeper and De:Bug to bring you official pre-parties for some of the best nights Sheffield has to offer. We have also played host to some of the regions finest DJ’s and new comers and have grown to have an affinity for closing venues down! Brezza, The Vine and a third to come soon? (Nothing to do with us ahum!)

 

So where do we go from here?

Nick Lawson Lawson (Visionquest l Shifted Flow l Busta Grove)

Nick was on the Dalen Light radar well before Dalen Light (Snr) was born with Carl having first heard him play back in August 2010 at Cargo. Since then there have been numerous ‘field trips’ down the M1 to hear Nick play at his own aptly named night Busta Groove.

 

Nick's early releases on Romulus Schwarz's Shrink and SheWolf Music imprints saw him develop a sound that was both organic and nostalgic. His low-slung groover 'Daphadandilly' achieved wide support, despite being released only digitally, and has since appeared on Matt Tolfrey's mix compilation for 1trax. Nick's collaborative works with Matthew Burton has seen them both explore different corners of House music, breaking the typical methodologies they normally adhere to with their solo efforts. Their first two releases together, 'Mischievous Moustache' (2009) and 'Playdo' (2010), appeared on MultiVitamins and Leftroom offshoot Left’d respectively. After both featuring on another Left'd release with 'Snuff It' (2011), the pair continued with their warehouse style in the shape of the moody Tech House track 'Gruff It' (2011) released on Visionquest. Other releases in 2011 included ‘Take Me Away’ on Fear of Flying, another collaboration with Matthew, and ‘Ma Feelinz’ on Morris Audio. Currently developing new material, 2012 has been a relatively quiet year for Nick so far, with two Spring-time releases in the shape of a remix of Jordan Peak's 'Got Soul' on Morris Audio and a solo EP on Back To You. Lawson will next appear on Matthew Burton's new vinyl only label Shifted Flow in the new year.

 

Nick is also known for his part in Busta Groove, a night he began with partner Matthew Burton in Berlin back in 2009. Since then, they have taken their philosophy of unapologetically deep nights to London and Nottingham, welcoming the likes of Ethyl, Kassem Mosse, BLM, murmur, Baaz, Giles Smith and Christopher Rau, amongst others.

 

Aside from Busta Groove, Nick also currently holds a residency at the Wherehouse? in Notts where he shares his own style of deep yet groove-laden House and Techno, showing he is just as at home playing a carefully crafted warm up set as he is at knocking out a more energetic peak timer.

 

Expect a deep and gritty style with a constant nod to dubby influences.

We're residents and promoters at Cargo and Phono in Sheffield. We hate doing DJ biogs, but needs must. Anyway...

 

We've shared the billing with the likes of Clive Henry, Subb-an, Burnski, Swayzak, Glimpse, Evil Eddie Richards, Adam Shelton, Chris Duckenfield, Rhythm Plate, Afronaught, Pete Dafeet, Inland Knights, Robert James, Joshua Iz, J.Cub, Alex Arnout, Dead Rose Music Company, Deep Space Orchestra, Miguel Campbell, Cesar Merveille, Maxxi Soundsystem, Deetron, Move D, Tom Trago, Prosumer, Roman Flugel & D'Julz.

 

We were also chosen to represent at the huge Radio 1 "In New Music We Trust" live show in Sheffield, where peeps like Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Heidi and Rob Da Bank all had the unenviable task of going on after our warm-up set.

 

We've also started dabbling with production and even had our first release. We downloaded the remix parts for a competition we had little or no intention of entering, but nevertheless the label picked up our version on Soundcloud and entered it for us - we were runners up and got included on the digital version of the record. What was it? "Inside Out" by New York disco legends Odyssey and the label was Yam Who?'s ISM Records. Huzzah!

There's good DJ's, there's those that have a talent and then there's Dave. He's on a whole other level and has been there for some time!

 

He's played alongside the likes of Sebastian Davidson, Phil Asher, Ashley Beedle, Benji b,Simbad, Ben Westbeech, Altered Natives, Grand High Priest, Joe Smooth, Jose Carretas, Bopstar, Ceramic, Kev Beedle, Souled, Aphrodisiax, Audiowhores, Justin Micheal, Afronaught, Matthew Bandy, Terry Farley, Quinn Whalley, Krysko,Colin Patterson, Red Rack'em, Central Avenue, Roman Rauch, Dan J, Desi Rocca, MuSol to name just a few.

 

He's also the co-owner of Jus' House records

The Dalen Light Movember Tashs’ have all but vanished and we now look forward to those festive December days.

 

With these frosty mornings, Christmas TV adverts and songs playing in shops and bars we’ve certainly caught the festive bug!... Are we the only ones sporadically blurting out with ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’??
