Top Tory says they should consider pact with UKIP

Recommended Posts

So despite Cameron having referred to UKIP as fruitcakes and closet racists a leading Tory and campaigns organiser thinks they should consider a pact with them in order to stop them taking Tory votes at the next election.

Mr Fabricant writes: "Such an offer would not be a sign of weakness by the Conservative Party. It would be a pragmatic extension of existing philosophy from a party of government."

However, he adds: "I recognise that any such move would be unpopular with our Coalition partners and so the timing of any such declaration would be critical."

I'm sure Glegg Junior will have something to say about that...or maybe he won't.

They're certainly worried but it's hardly surprising is it? It wouldn't surprised me if the call out the troops if it looks like they might lose the 2015 election; shame they've even been bullying the army and police too.

This just reflects the fact that UKIP is treading on the toes of the Tory right and that the Tories know it will cost them votes. Either the Tories enter a pact or move more to the right - if UKIP are a genuine threat then those are ways to contain them. That or the Tories plant themselves more firmly into the centre and deal with UKIP head-on but the problem with that approach is they will alienate some core support.

UKIP are not just a problem for the Tories though because they might have the capability to damage any of the other parties.

But tactical voting is costing them seats. I wonder if the tories will promise yet another referendum on the Euorpean constitution at the next election and then make a U-turn.

I think they will offer it. Same strategy as with Scottish referendum - some undetermined question at some undetermined point between 2015-2020.

I think all parties should offer it though. The public mood is pretty clear

By the way, when are we getting that referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon that Tony "nice guy" Blair promised us before the 2005 election? [LINK]

I know it's been nearly 8 years now but shouldn't we get that one out of the way first?

Just goes to show that the tories will get into bed with ANYONE to get power. Next stop the BNP :)

Same with Labour and the Lib Dems. Labour approached the Lib Dems at the last election, and the Lib Dems are discussing a coalition with Labour for the next:
