harestone
If you have an Android or iPhone (or iPad), there are some great apps you can point at the sky and it lines up with what you can see - brilliant for nights like this! I use Stellarium. Really shot myself in the foot with the title, I'm a very experienced amateur astronomer, though one that hasn't looked skywards in over a year. harestone
So is Venus not prominent tonight then? Did Harestone mean Jupiter when you said Venus? I'm off out to have a look either way. That is correct.

JenC
A clear night and no significant geomagnetic activity. A few days ago the activity was pretty strong for two nights running but there was far too much cloud to see anything.

harestone
Oh look at you and Jenc getting all technical. Ooh, if you've never seen an Iridium flare you should. I'm convinced these account for a huge majority of "ufo" sightings, plus you can play tricks on the kids with them.

harestone
Tell me more. When, where, how?? There's a -4 one tomorrow at 17.10, it will approach from the South and head North. It will appear like a dim satellite firstly before brightening quite rapidly if you're not familiar with them. One not to miss is the one at 17.04 on the 30th, that will be -8.4.
