Obelix
They don't own most of it. It's held by them on behalf of the nation. The Queen in person doesnt for example own Buckingham palace or Windsor castle - they are held by the Crown.
andygardener
£44.5 billion is pretty impressive. What's the "brand value" of Joachim Gauck?

Obelix
Certainly not the Crown Jewels - there is legislation stating they cannot be sold, pawned or removed from the realm.
Rampent
How much of the asset value can the Royal Family actually liquidate for their own use? It's a tough one to call. I looked on the internet. Still mega money, don't you think?
medusa
If you compare the costs of running the country with the potential liquid assets of the royal family I think you'll find that their wealth would run the NHS for about an hour and a half (or similar really short timespan- not done any calculations) and then it would be gone. If the royals have more than £5billion between them in assets that could be liquidated reasonably quickly I'd be very surprised. Virtually everything else has a covenant on it preventing sale, from the artworks and crown jewels to assorted castles and palaces.

Opines? If you'd included/read the second part of the paragraph you posted, you'd see what it was for (rather than nowt):- "On top of that, the monarchy is reckoned to be worth an additional £26.4 billion because of the economic benefits it brings to the UK, through the boost to tourism and other industries." Essentially, advertising for the UK's business and national interests the like of which is almost impossible to buy. The report goes on to say:- “The Monarchy is a powerful endorsement for individual and company brands and for the nation brand. We believe that it is making a significant contribution to the task of driving Britain out of recession.” “Monarchy is more than a historical throwback to the days of the British Empire but a much-needed impetus for economic growth in the United Kingdom.”
