How much a week for a single person to eat reasonably healthy?

Like I said I don't like to eat rubbish eating is a pleasure not a thing that you can skimp on if you like your nosh,I might be a bit over with the £20 a day,maybe if I was on a tight budget I would have to economize,if you like a nice bit of stake or a decent bit of fish add the veg and and trimmings a bit of pudding for afters a tenner is not a lot Im not saying I have stake every night but I could not last a week on just £20 for food it cant be a very healthy diet,I cant stand warm ups eating things that have been in the fridge for a week they had to do things like that in the war times.

 

I know I shouldn't , I know I shouldn't , I know .........but cannot help it.

 

Its "steak" not "stake".

You don't have to spend a fortune to eat properly. I'm 6' 2' and 15 stone and have been for years, (15 stone that is). Yesterday (this is for two) we had fish chips and mushy peas, it cost £3.23. Today we are having pork chops, roast potatoes, sprouts along with season pudding and gravy, total cost £3.65. If you know how to cook it's easy, I learned to cook watching my parents, who were both good cooks. Based on the above prices we both eat for less than £28.00 per week. But then add on breakfast/ lunch say £15.00, it's around the £40.00 mark. Halve it and it's around £20.00 per person.

Back in the 1960s, we were on a low income (trainee medical specialist). We built a collection of cheap, nutritious foods.

Later, in general practice in Australia, we were much "better off". But a lady patient came in crying; her husband had reached pension age, and she didn't know how they were to live on the pension. (they had a good small car, own house with low rates, etc.)

So I dug out our recipe book for her, which had fed me, my wife and 3 small children (and two dogs!).

She looked through it:

"Oh, Doctor, I couldn't expect my husband to eat THAT!"

Turned out he was a "top-class fillet steak" man, and threw "inferior " food out for their dog.

I left a year or so later, so never found out how they got on.

If you find some of the old recipe's they can be quite cheap and healthy.

I remember growing up back in the fifties, my mother was preparing a sheep's head broth. My father used to say, "Leave the eye's in and it'll see us through the week".

Im trying to keep it to the original idea, and occasionally report what i eat and what it cost..

I do have a strong feeling that many who complain about the price of food are those that think kebabs etc should be classed as food

I buy all sorts of junk when it suits me, but I can and do cook, and it isnt expensive to do so

 

That was the point of my contribution to, I can live on £25 or £20 a week for food if I stretched it out a bit, but I don't have to and don't need to. Food is getting more expensive but that doesn't mean you still can't live cheaply if you put a little bit of thought and effort in. It's nice to have a steak every so often or eat out occasionally and the cheaper you eat day to day the more often you can treat yourself. Anyone who genuinely does have a budget to keep to isn't going to be helped by comments like I've just spent £20 on steak or I spend a fiver on breakfast everyday. That's great if you can afford it but it's not compulsory.

I had graduated and was looking for a full time job, but in the meanwhile working as a barmaid, which meant I earned bugger all, but had lots of time to plan and shop. It just takes planning and imagination. Helps if you can cook stuff ahead of time eg casseroles using cheaper cuts. If you like offal, you're quids in!

I think this is unfair on aspidistra who does make quite varied comments.
