Plans for "crisis house" for people with mental illness

I couldn't find the neighbour objections yesterday, but I've found them now and had a read of them. I don't see how the application can be approved in the face of universal opposition from residents. Far better place the hostel/clinic somewhere where there would be minimal objection from neighbours.

I hadn't realised before that the same carity, Rethink, had been involved in Hannah Bonser's care in Doncaster. She's the woman who was recently locked up for randomly stabbing to death a 13 year old girl in a Doncaster park.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-18691468

The court was told that Ms Bonser described herself as "a complete psychopath" about a month before the attack.

Miss Mallin told the jury the defendant stayed in Rethink's crisis accommodation in Doncaster for a week in January.

She was shown a log entry for the day before she left which recorded that she had asked to see a doctor to get anti-psychotic drugs.

David Fish QC, defending, asked Miss Mallin: "Before leaving, she (Bonser) said she wanted to be seen by a doctor, wanted some anti-psychotic medication and that her thoughts towards others was such that she was saying that she was a complete psychopath?"

And this is exactly why people with mental health problems should not be in these crisis houses. Secure & safe accomodation is what's needed - Not care in the community!

I wonder what kind of noise people imagine they might hear from the house? Mental health medication is very sedating, so people sleep heavily and/or are given sleeping tablets, because people know how important sleep is for good mental health. In hospitals the standard time for giving medication is 10pm.

People with mental health problems in crisis are known for being very quiet. When very ill people with this illness are usually very withdrawn, very quiet, speak very little, when they cry they often make no noise, it is usually seen through tears rolling down their cheeks. When very unwell people with mental illness often sleep a lot, or sit very still for prolonged periods of time. They rarely speak, socialise, use the phone or move very much. At Crisis point they are usually too ill to do any of these things.

People working with these people when very ill know how important it is to be very calm, quiet and gentle, because people in crisis are very frightened of noise and other people.

People with mental illness often have only a few friends because they find it difficult to socialise regularly. It is well known that this group of patients get much fewer visits from family and friends than people with other illnesses, they get less Christmas cards, less get well soon cards, they rarely get flowers or grapes.

I think you need to look at the history of this case again, but properly, this time.

The main reason that Bonser was able to kill Casey Kearney was precisely because this sort of centre/intervention WAS NOT AVAILABLE to her.

But she had been staying in Rethink's crisis accommodation in Doncaster before she stabbed the 13 year old to death. It's understandable that local residents don't want this in their area, isn't it?

People with mental health difficulties are living everywhere anyway, including all over Nether Edge, often without the support they need. This facility will mean that people in crisis are supported and enabled to access the services they need.

By the way, Bonsor wasn't using Rethink accommodation when she offended

Well, let's hope they put in some good quality soundproofing then :)

I wish I could share your confidence about well-built houses and soundproofing. In my experience it isn't always the case. A colleague of mine lives in an early Victorian in Norfolk park, she's driven mad by the students next door, we never hear the end of it!

I know. We used to host some great parties. One of our friends was in the South American society and used to borrow our garden to host summer parties. Those people really know how to party. They used to bring the music system into the garden and perform dances for us all. It was brilliant. She would light the whole garden with candles, in paper bags. We learnt all different dances. And of course the whole Spanish Latin American culture is built on community and socialising. And though they were in the UK for years they never got used to starting the evening before 10pm.

And one of our housemates used to host his University departments social events, staff and students came. I got to know lots of people in his department, a totally different subject to mine. Those were the days.

They loved sitting up, with a fire, to see the sunrise. Good times.

There are a lot of alleged Doctors objecting.

At least if you're looking for somewhere to live you know what part of the city to avoid - not because of the crisis house but the narrow minded losers who live near it.

anyone with a PhD or other Doctoral Degree can use the title 'Doctor' and arguably have more right to do so than a Registered Medical Practitioner who has trained in a none US -based system where the primary medical qualification is a double or triple bachelor's degree.

it would not surprise me one bit if the 'Doctor' objectors are 'academics', anyone with access to SHU and/or UoS's staff directories care to comment ?

Many of the objections are invalid as they do not provide reasons why the planning application is counter to the development rules. it's NIMBYism and neglects that people with Mental health difficulties are are more likely to be the victims of violence than perpetrators

Zippy - go through the thread and you will see the actual occupations of those raising protests have been "outed".
