Dannyno
The idea of a "market" in school provision disgusts me. But if the ability to choose a school means long journeys, then either everyone should have subsidised transport, or nobody should. There should not be religious tests for the availaibility of subsidised or free transport. But that's the situation we're in. Some stories from elsewhere: Flintshire: http://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2012/11/if-you-cant-prove-youre-a-christian-get-off-the-school-bus Northumberland: http://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2012/09/parents-object-to-school-bus-apartheid-in-northumberland Wakefield: http://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2012/06/wakefield-latest-council-to-propose-cutting-faith-school-transport-subsidies Cheshire East: http://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2012/06/no-justification-for-subsidising-faith-school-transport Essex: http://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2012/03/essex-county-council-scraps-transport-subsidy-for-faith-schools And so on. Becky B
The perfect solution, if we lived in an ideal world. The one where it never rains, so you are not sat in wet clothes all day. The one where you do not have to take a packed lunch, as you are not entitled to free meals because of working parents, who cannot afford school meals. Or perhaps the school with lockers that are secure, so you don't have to lug your school work around in a heavy bag all day. Waterproof coat. Rucksack. Lunchbox. I never knew there was such a thing as free school bus passes! I'm learning every day... I had to pay for my school bus, when I used it. I preferred to walk because I enjoyed the exercise and there were too many smokers on the bus, so I'd get home stinking. It was about 2 miles to my school, I even used to walk across fields and along the old railway line, shock, horror! Apparently we need to move with the times, but have things changed that much in the 15 years since I left school?

Kit!
The scrapping of the pass is wrong, but, maybe there could be a halfway house. University students (17/18yrs+) pay 60p with a pass. Children from starting at 5yrs old pay 60p.....How does that work out? You can have a 'full grown' adult or an 18-28yr old(who frequents the local taverns & throws up a yrs worth of bus fares down the toilet...I am not saying this applies to all students)paying the same as a 5yr old. maybe children of a school age(5yrs -18yrs) should get a pass that allows them to use it only at certain times of the day to get a fare for say 20pwhen they're at infant & primary school. 30p when they attend secondry school & 60p at college/uni. Why does any 5 year old have to catch a bus to school? There are over 130 primary schools in Sheffield -every child must surely have one within walking distance? A lot of this travelling to the other side of the city is pure snobbery. There is a school within walking distance in most areas of Sheffield.
