barpen
If you didn't mean the park then you should have said so in the first place. No need to get shirty How do you know the council failed to make the effort? I guess you have information confirming this, do you? Well there are 2 possibilities aren't there. One the council only offered to let the tour use the bit of Sheffield on the outskirts, or they offered to let the tour come into the city centre and the organisers said they didn't want to although they did want to use the centre of Leeds and the centre of Harrogate. Which do you think it was?

Tour doesn't do the centre "Council hate Sheffield, stand in way of event raising profile of city" Tour does the centre "Car hating council ban drivers for lycra louts to race - commerce hit in city"
Andy C
Meadowhall is a good finishing point from practical points of view. It is a landmark location, has plenty of space and good facilities to lay on catering, entertainment etc. Also keeping in mind pretty much all the roads at that end of town will be closed to accommodate the TDF race. You will not be able to drive or get a bus to there other than from the Rotherham side, you will however be able to drop off the M1 into Meadowhall's car park. For everyone else, Meadowhall benefits from having a train and tram line to it from the City Centre - so spectators travelling to the finish line can either catch a bus or drive their car into Sheffield City Centre, then use a rail service out to Meadowhall. the_rudeboy
Even when something positive happens in this city, some will find, or create, something to moan and whinge about. It's the biggest annual sporting event on the planet and Sheffield is being part of it. It's a one off. Embrace it.
Doom
Somebody was on the radio this morning saying he wasn't interested in cycling so it didn't bother him. I don't take an interest in the Tour de France, but I see this as an event rather than a cycle race, so unless the weather is awful, I'll be there to experience the day. It was also mentioned the two fan zones with big screens will be Don Valley Bowl and Coronation Park in Oughtibridge. I think my vantage point will be the Cow and Calf in Grenoside. Jeffrey Shaw
Yes the biggest sporting event in the world. Is it? Your evidence? Be the change you want to see! Meaningless, I regret. It'd mean just as little if you were to say See the change you want to be or Be the you you want to change or Want the change you see to be
