Is it? Your evidence?

its an oft repeated claim that it is the largest annual sporting event in the world- http://letour.yorkshire.com/news/tour-de-france-the-facts bit no definition of "largest". olympics and world cup are obviously massively covered global events but not annual.

i am presuming something about global viewing audience (TV etc) or some such stat.

The fact that the UK section has included Yorkshire means that this part of the UK is pretty traditional still. I do not understand why people do not seem to feel that bit of pride about their hometowns. That's a bit strange to see. I am sure that people in North Yorkshire is embracing this a lot more.

The UK route is going through the hilly side of Yorkshire, and then onto Cambridge which is quite historical anyway, and onwards to London. I think it's quite a nice route.

Where's the Yorkshire Pride?

I bet the cricket team will be over the moon with a load of lycra wearing cycling fans wrecking the cricket pitch in the middle of their season down there .

Meadowhall is a good finishing point from practical points of view.

It is a landmark location, has plenty of space and good facilities to lay on catering, entertainment etc.

Also keeping in mind pretty much all the roads at that end of town will be closed to accommodate the TDF race.

You will not be able to drive or get a bus to there other than from the Rotherham side, you will however be able to drop off the M1 into Meadowhall's car park.

For everyone else, Meadowhall benefits from having a train and tram line to it from the City Centre - so spectators travelling to the finish line can either catch a bus or drive their car into Sheffield City Centre, then use a rail service out to Meadowhall.

Doesn't that argument work just as well if the finishing point were in the city center? You can drop into Meadow Hall and catch the train/tram into the city center to watch the finish. Or at least it would be if the organisers had y'know organised. Then again given the debacle over the half marathon organisation doesn't seem to be high on the cities abilities. Sheffield - city bird - The Male Chicken (up) :(

I reckon 30ft down the hill from the speed bumps down Newman Road would be a great place to see some flying cyclists. They will be hitting the ramps at 50mph plus. Then there is the corner at the bottom.

I think they take the speed humps up for the race ;)
